CMAI Strengthens India’s Sustainable Fashion Movement with SU.RE Website & Supply Chain Directory

March 11, 2025 | By Textile Outlook India

The Clothing Manufacturers Association of India (CMAI) has taken a bold step towards sustainability with the launch of the SU.RE website and the SU.RE Sustainable Supply Chain Directory. This initiative aims to accelerate India’s transition to eco-friendly fashion by providing a comprehensive platform for knowledge-sharing, responsible sourcing, and collaboration across the apparel industry.

The SU.RE – Sustainable Resolution website serves as a hub for education, resources, and industry insights, featuring news, case studies, and best practices from sustainability leaders. Meanwhile, the SU.RE Sustainable Supply Chain Directory connects brands with 600+ verified vendors in key categories such as fabric manufacturing, recycling, sustainable packaging, and certification services—making responsible sourcing easier than ever.

Developed in collaboration with the Centre for Environment Education (CEE) and the Global Alliance for Textile Sustainability (GATS), the directory promotes innovation and accessibility in sustainable sourcing, streamlining connections between fashion brands and eco-conscious suppliers. With India’s sustainable fashion market projected to grow at a CAGR of 45%, reaching INR 25,000 Cr by FY30, this initiative comes at a crucial time.

Sustainability is no longer optional for the fashion industry, which faces pressing environmental and ethical challenges. For instance, washing clothes 200 times annually can consume up to 15,000 liters of water and energy, while less than 50% of textile waste is reused or remanufactured. The industry also struggles with lack of transparency and weak labor law enforcement, particularly in informal sectors. Addressing these issues through ethical sourcing and responsible manufacturing is essential for long-term sustainability.

SU.RE: India’s Largest Industry-Wide Sustainability Commitment

Launched in 2019, SU.RE (Sustainable Resolution) is India’s largest voluntary commitment to sustainable fashion. Jointly initiated by CMAI and Reliance Brands Limited (RBL), with support from the United Nations in India, SU.RE drives the adoption of eco-friendly materials, responsible sourcing, and ethical manufacturing practices.

At its core, SU.RE operates under a five-point manifesto guiding the industry’s sustainable transformation:

– Environmental Awareness – Understanding the environmental impact of garment production.

– Sustainable Sourcing – Prioritizing certified raw materials that reduce environmental harm.

– Responsible Decision-Making – Ensuring sustainability across the value chain with traceable, renewable materials.

– Transparent Communication – Engaging consumers through labeling, social media, and store messaging.

– Long-Term Commitment – Aiming for a major industry shift by 2030, aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

With the official launch at Bharat Tex 2025, the SU.RE website and Supply Chain Directory mark a major milestone in India’s journey towards a responsible, ethical, and globally competitive apparel sector. These tools empower brands to make informed decisions, drive innovation, and implement sustainable practices—transforming the future of Indian fashion.
