Mr. N. K. Brahmachari, Managing Partner of Amritlakshmi Machine Works, shares insights with Shami Lalwani on the company’s innovations, sustainable textile machinery solutions, and its vision for the future of the industry.

Q. Amritlakshmi Machine Works has been a key player in the Weaving Preparatory Sector. Can you share the company’s journey and its major milestones over the years?
After a stint on agencies of Textile Machines made in Ahmedabad in the 1970’s Amritlakshmi Machine Works (AMW) was incorporated in 1977 and started production at Umbergam Gujarat in 1978, the GIDC estate was one of the first in Gujarat to lure SSI manufacturers of other states to Gujarat, out of the 3000 and more industries today we were the 4th on a larger scale.

The desire to start AMW came from the strong desire to make correctly designed machines by keeping the Customer needs in mind (which is our main aim even today even after 47 years of quality manufacturing for India and Abroad) and to offer import substitutes to the Indian Textile Industry which was heavily dependent on old second hand machines from UK, Germany and USA etc.

We have always been ahead of the needs of the Textile Industry being constantly focusing on R & D and after developing variety of machines we were led to the manufacture of India’s first 100% Indigenous Sizing Machine in 1980 for Cotton Yarn thanks to the Mafatlal Group Company Mihir Textiles, Ahmedabad.

Thereafter we developed India’s first Double Sow Box Sizing Machine for Mafatlal Mills No.3 in Mumbai to feed high quality Cotton Yarn Loom Beams for their 114 Tsudakoma Air Jet machines probably the first lot of the imported Air Jet Looms in India–it was a great success due to the support of the management and expert technicians.

Amritlakshmi has since 1980 never looked back ever and then in 1986 developed India’s first Zero Twist Polyester Yarn Sizing Machine and in 1990 exported these machines too. This development was followed by the development of the PLC Controlled Multi Point Sizing machines in the year 2000 and that led to the development of the PLC Controlled Jute Warping and Sizing machines in 2002.

Amritlakshmi was established as the only manufacturer in the 2002 to offer High Quality and High-speed Warping and Sizing machines for all the type of Spun Yarn including Jute as well as Filament Yarn-and hence their slogan Preparatory Machines for “ANY YARN ANY LOOM ANY WIDTH”!
Mr. N K Brahmachari through the Amritlakshmi Group Sister concerns developed in 2004 India’s first Automated Car parking Systems for Societies, Malls etc. and in 2010 a unique Hardware and Software for the Indian Air Force for keeping records of Aircraft Maintenance for over 50 years was successfully designed and developed and put to commercial use at Kanpur.

Q. GTTES 2025 is a significant platform for showcasing innovations. What are the key Weaving Preparatory Machines and accessories that Amritlakshmi Machine Works is presenting at the exhibition?
At the GTTES we have displayed our expertise not only for our versatile Warping and Sizing Systems but recently we have started offering full projects for complete Weaving Solutions and are in the process of training the team so that Amritlakshmi offers a One Stop Shop for a Weaving Plant.

Q. With the increasing focus on automation and digitalization, how is Amritlakshmi integrating Industry 4.0 technologies into its weaving solutions?
Amritlakshmi has been ahead in its innovations and new developments over the years since inception and especially after 2000 we have been observing the automation development abroad and developing and incorporating the similar technologies after making modifications to suit the Indian Customers.

Q. Sustainability is a growing priority in textile manufacturing. How does your company ensure energy-efficient and eco-friendly weaving machinery?
Amritlakshmi has consistently pursued advancements, with only a brief setback during the Covid and post-Covid period. Despite those challenges, the company has remained focused on key areas of improvement, including reducing running costs and optimizing power consumption. Efforts have been directed towards enhancing the longevity of machines by incorporating high-quality components, which not only minimize maintenance costs but also ensure better durability. Additionally, Amritlakshmi has prioritized space-saving designs to improve operational efficiency. These continuous innovations reflect the company’s commitment to delivering high-performance, cost-effective, and sustainable textile machinery solutions.

Q. India’s textile industry is shifting towards high-speed, high efficiency weaving technologies. How is Amritlakshmi Machine Works addressing this demand?
At Amritlakshmi, we constantly focus on improving technologies and developing next-generation solutions—an ongoing objective for us.

Q. The demand for technical textiles and high-performance fabrics is rising. How are your weaving solutions catering to these emerging sectors?
We already have Winding Machines of different time for the Weaving and Knitting Industry and can cater to new demands at any time —we have never failed in any our developments due to focussed efforts and teamwork.

Q. With strong competition from global weaving machinery manufacturers, what sets Amritlakshmi Machine Works apart in terms of technology, quality, and service?
Here I need to share that our machines are at par with foreign machines and with latest machine tools in the country as well as latest Instrumentation and Drives available our Design and Production quality is equivalent to machines from abroad albeit of lesser costs.
I feel in the coming years we will have to focus on service and spares nearer to the machine’s sites and with our already established Brand Image we have a higher responsibility especially with over 450 machines running for over 30 years!

Q. How do you see the role of Indian weaving machinery manufacturers in reducing dependency on imports and strengthening domestic production capabilities?
I have only one main regret for the Weaving Industry and that is that India did not or could develop the High Speed Air Jet /Water Jet and Rapier Looms in time which gap was filled by the second hand Sulzers and the now the Chinese have supplied all the type of Looms in a big way—the Indian user is “hungry” to produce fabrics and he is not going to wait for India to develop the Looms and take years for it. I imported the Air Jet/Water Jet Looms for Spun and Filament Yarn as well as for Glass Yarn and displayed them at the 1992 ITME exhibition at Mumbai but this project was shot down due to high costs and high import duties.
Had the Government supported then or even in recent times I am sure most of the looms in India would be Indian!
Even today I have already requested that to make India “Atmanirbhar” in all fields let us import any component, instrument, sub assembly or the technology we need at zero duty as long as we make a 100% Indian machine of equivalent performance as the foreign one!
Collaborations / CKD’s and all turn out expensive in the long run for the majority and hence cheaper machines including reconditioned ones find their way to India and those countries are benefitting.

Q. Looking ahead, what are the company’s plans for expansion, new product developments, and technological advancements in weaving machinery?
We will be focusing on the supply of full projects for the Weaving Industry and in next two years we will be able to establish ourselves with Government and Bank Support with 100% Technologies which is our main aim.
