Evonik and AMSilk Strengthen Partnership to Scale Sustainable Biotech Silk

Evonik and AMSilk, a global leader in advanced biomaterials based on silk proteins, have expanded their collaboration through a long-term partnership to produce sustainable silk proteins at industrial scale. Building on their initial agreement in 2023, the companies have commissioned a dedicated production line at Evonik’s biotech hub in Slovakia for AMSilk’s high-performance silk materials.
Developed with biotechnology, AMSilk’s silk proteins are designed to meet the performance demands of premium fashion and automotive interiors while minimizing environmental impact. The new production line, powered by renewable energy and equipped with advanced systems, ensures the consistent monthly output of several tons of spinning-grade silk proteins that comply with stringent industrial standards.
“Our collaboration with AMSilk demonstrates how biotechnology can shape the materials of the future,” said Guido Skudlarek, Head of Evonik’s Health Care business line. “By scaling sustainable silk proteins, we are not only broadening our biosolutions portfolio but also creating transformative products that improve lives and reduce reliance on fossil-based resources.”
AMSilk converts the silk protein powder into high-performance yarns, delivering premium quality with full supply chain transparency. Vegan, biodegradable, and derived from renewable plant-based carbon, these biomaterials contain no microplastics, aligning with global sustainability goals. The company is targeting the €26 billion protein fiber market, with a focus on a €16 billion serviceable segment including silk, cashmere, and merino.
