Swiss Innovation Driving the Future of Textile Machinery
In this interaction, Pia Terasa, VP Marketing & Communications, Saurer Group (Saurer Intelligent Technology AG), shares insights with Textile Sphere India on global textile machinery trends. She highlights the role of Swiss innovation in advancing automation, sustainability, and precision engineering to meet evolving industry demands.

Q. How do you see the current global textile machinery market evolving, and what role do Swiss manufacturers play in shaping its technological direction?
Several megatrends and near-term factors are reshaping the textile industry today.
The shift toward a circular textile economy is creating new challenges for spinners and machinery manufacturers alike. Smaller lot sizes, faster changeovers, and a growing variety of fibres — including recycled and plant-based options — are transforming yarn production. At the same time, the industry must conserve resources, reduce waste, and improve energy efficiency without sacrificing production flexibility.
Automation and digitalisation represent the second major megatrend. Workforce shortages in spinning mills have become a near-global challenge, accelerating the demand for automation solutions that are flexible, affordable, and tailored to individual customers. Digitalisation is now standard practice — embedded within machinery and across mill monitoring systems.
Despite intensifying global competition, Swiss manufacturers continue to play a pivotal role in shaping the industry’s technological direction. Their strength lies in high-value innovation, particularly in precision engineering and smart automation for spinning, twisting, and further downstream processes.
Finally, recent geopolitical developments are weighing on consumer confidence, contributing to fuel and gas shortages in certain regions, disrupting value chains, and adding further complexity to an already challenging environment for the textile industry.
Q. Saurer has long been associated with precision and reliability. What core philosophy continues to guide your product development strategy today?
Guiding our R&D is the E3 philosophy, built around three core principles: developing more Energy-efficient machinery, delivering Economic advantages for our customers, and improving workplace Ergonomics through better material flow, HMI, automation, and digitalisation.
We continue to integrate intelligent technology into our products, driven by a genuine passion for textile machinery and a commitment to creating real value for our clients’ businesses.
Q. With increasing demand for automation and digitalisation, how is Saurer integrating smart manufacturing and Industry 4.0 solutions?
Saurer’s automation philosophy consists of two levels. The first level involves integrating automation and control features into individual machines to streamline workflow. These features include Autodoffing, piecing, intelligent speed control and quality monitoring. The second level optimises material flow between machines using autonomous driving systems, AGVs (automated guided vehicles), the bobbin transport system (BTS) and collaborative robots. These modular, customer-specific automation solutions enhance productivity, reduce labour dependency and ensure efficient, high-quality operations throughout the textile production process.
Q. Sustainability has become a key priority for textile producers. How are Saurer’s solutions helping mills reduce energy consumption, waste, and environmental impact?
Our portfolio includes several capabilities designed to help customers improve their production processes.
Energy efficiency is one key area, with examples on both the machinery and components side. The new Zinser 51 and the Autocoro 11 each use 10% less energy than their previous models. In the case of the Autocoro, energy consumption has been reduced by more than 30% over the last 15 years.
Extending machinery lifetime is another step toward more sustainable production. Through service, upgrades, and updates, we help customers maximize the efficient operational life of their equipment.
Beyond energy, resource saving is equally important. One of our targets is maximizing production output per square meter of floor space — because saving space means saving more than just machine materials.
Recycled fibres and minimised waste: rotor spinning machines offer excellent capabilities for spinning even very short fibres, helping to reduce material loss. The Autocoro 11 takes this a step further with a dedicated waste chamber designed to support the recycling of mill waste.
Our ring frames also feature an above-average tolerance for short fibres, making them well-suited for working with recycled materials. And for added performance, our twisting machines can further strengthen recycled yarns.
Q. How important is the Indian market for Saurer, and what trends are you observing among Indian spinners?
India ranks as the second largest spinning market in the world, making it a strategically significant region by any measure. Saurer’s decision to establish local production in India approximately 10 years ago reflects the long-term commitment we have placed on this market.
India is also a highly competitive, high-speed market for ring spinning. We are pleased to see a growing number of customers, many of them export-oriented, who demand high-end equipment to meet their production requirements. Yarn quality, spinning speed, low maintenance costs, and energy efficiency are all priorities for Indian spinners. At a recent customer event in Karjan, we received strong positive feedback for our latest ring frame, the Zinser 51, and our innovative new compact system.
Saurer also maintains a substantial customer base among rotor spinners in India. Production flexibility and the ability to process recycled fibers are increasingly important trends in this segment. The growing shortage of skilled manpower in the industry has led many operators to consider fully automated rotor spinning machinery, particularly solutions with strong energy-saving capabilities. We are confident that our rotor spinning portfolio offers the right solution across all applications. At the recent ITMA Asia in Singapore, it was a proud moment to see our team of technologists wearing polo shirts made from recycled material, produced on the BD 8 in India.
Q. Could you share recent innovations or upcoming technologies from Saurer that will significantly influence yarn quality and production efficiency?
The innovations in automation and digitalisation are set to have a significant impact on both productivity and yarn quality. Monitoring the entire value chain enables upstream processes to be adapted for improved yarn quality. For example, data from Corolab and Airolab yarn monitoring sensors can be used to adjust card settings.
Component development also continues with yarn quality as a central focus. The new Zinser 51 compact unit, Zpact, is one of the latest innovations in this area. Texparts weighting arms have long been an industry standard for producing excellent ring spun yarn. The combination of the Eshape spindle with Spinfinity zero underwinding not only supports energy savings but also enables automation while ensuring minimum yarn breaks after doffing.
Our rotor spinning machines offer numerous features to increase productivity as well, including additional DCUs, extended Synchropiecing, and further capabilities included in the Recycling Xtreme version of the Autocoro 11, enabling high productivity even when spinning very short fibres.
Women Leadership in Textile & Apparel Industry
Q. As a senior woman leader in a global textile technology company, what challenges and opportunities have you experienced in your professional journey?
When I started my career a few decades ago, the world was quite different to how it is today. Although women had opportunities back then, the old saying that women had to work harder to be recognised was not far off the mark.
Although times are changing, women are still more likely to be found in traditional roles such as HR, marketing or finance despite actually excelling I engineering. Even now, when I travel to some of the world’s more remote places, I don’t encounter many women who travel in the same way as I do on the machinery side. Within textile sourcing on the other hand, there are a lot of women travelling even more than I do.
Over the last 20 years, I have been very fortunate to have had superiors who have challenged and supported me, given me excellent advice, recognised my potential, and helped me grow. It has been a privilege to work for one company for so long, and I do my best to support the next generation as well.
Q. What steps should companies take to encourage greater participation of women in technical and leadership roles within textiles?
We need to start by attracting talent. If our industry is perceived as being unattractive, the best talent will go to other industries. Some of the needed measures differ by region. In some countries, extraordinary efforts are still required to combine family and career at certain levels/in certain positions; it is possible, but it needs planning. Flexibility of the employer’s side is a key factor. Challenging tasks as well as career opportunities and career paths are needed to make the industry popular.
People look up to role models. If a company or an association has a diverse workforce at all management levels, it will be more likely to attract high-potential talent (including women). We need people with a vision to change and courage to execute it.
Q. What advice would you give young women aspiring to build careers in engineering, technology, and leadership within the textile and machinery sector?
Build your career on solid knowledge. This approach has worked well for me over the years. It’s also important to plan ahead, especially if you have a family. If something unexpected happens along your career path, just get up and try again, don’t give up. Choose something you can be passionate about — it makes all the difference!
It is important to regularly step outside your comfort zone, this is where development happens. Even though it has been challenging at times, there has never been a dull day working in the textile industry. While we look at yarn values and spinning parameters and fibres, at the end a lot of the end-products in textile are more related to emotions than engineering. I do feel that at Saurer we live textile.
