Readymade garments led growth despite global trade headwinds.

India’s textile and apparel sector posted exports worth around Rs 3.16 lakh crore in FY 2025–26, registering an overall growth of 2.1 per cent, with readymade garments continuing to be the largest contributor.

Readymade garments of all textiles emerged as the top export category, rising from Rs 1,35,427.6 crore in FY25 to Rs 1,39,349.6 crore in FY26, reflecting a growth of 2.9 per cent. Cotton yarn, fabrics, made-ups and handloom products remained stable, recording exports of Rs 1,02,399.7 crore in FY26 compared to Rs 1,02,002.8 crore in the previous year, marking a marginal increase of 0.4 per cent.

Man-made yarn, fabrics and made-ups reported a stronger performance, growing by 3.6 per cent. Exports in this segment increased from Rs 41,196.0 crore in FY25 to Rs 42,687.8 crore in FY26. Among value-added categories, handicrafts excluding handmade carpets showed the highest growth among major segments, rising by 6.1 per cent from Rs 14,945.5 crore to Rs 15,855.1 crore.

The sector delivered a mixed performance during the year as it navigated global trade uncertainties, including tariff-related pressures in key markets. Despite this, export growth was recorded across more than 120 destinations between April 2025 and February 2026 compared to the same period a year earlier.

Significant gains were noted in markets such as the UAE, UK, Germany, Spain, Japan, Egypt, Nigeria, Senegal and Sudan.

The textile industry remains a major employment driver, supporting over 45 million direct jobs and producing nearly 22,000 million garments annually. Government support has also strengthened competitiveness, with the Union Budget 2025–26 allocating Rs 5,272 crore to the Ministry of Textiles, up 19 per cent year-on-year, along with a five-year Cotton Mission and approvals for seven PM MITRA parks.
