BTRA And MIDC Partner to Build India’s First Carbon Fibre Plant at PM MITRA Park, Amravati

India’s advanced materials and technical textiles sector received a significant boost with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between The Bombay Textile Research Association (BTRA) and the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) to establish the country’s first 120 TPA Carbon Fibre Technology Demonstration Plant at the PM MITRA Park in Amravati, Maharashtra.
The agreement was exchanged between Dr. P. Anbalagan, IAS, Principal Secretary (Industries, Investment & Services), Government of Maharashtra, and Dr. T. V. Sreekumar, Director, BTRA, in the presence of Dr. Sharad Kumar Saraf, Chairman, BTRA.
As part of the initiative, a National Centre for Carbon Fibre Technology Development will be established. The centre will house a carbon fibre demonstration plant, advanced R&D facilities, testing and characterization laboratories, technology validation and scale-up infrastructure, skill development and training centres, and a platform for industry support and technology transfer.
The project aims to bridge the gap between laboratory research and commercial production by facilitating pilot-scale manufacturing, product development, process validation, and commercialization of indigenous carbon fibre technologies. It is expected to accelerate the adoption of carbon fibre applications across Indian industries.
Carbon fibre is a strategic high-performance material widely used in aerospace, defence, automotive, renewable energy, railways, infrastructure, hydrogen storage, and sports equipment. The initiative is expected to reduce import dependence, strengthen domestic manufacturing capabilities, conserve foreign exchange, and enhance India’s technological self-reliance.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. T. V. Sreekumar said the project would promote research, innovation, industry-academia collaboration, startup and MSME participation, and workforce development for the advanced composites sector.
Aligned with the objectives of Atmanirbhar Bharat, Make in India, and the PM MITRA Scheme, the project further reinforces Maharashtra’s position as a hub for advanced manufacturing, research, and technical textile innovation.
