Bengaluru’s New Circular Textile Lab Aims to Eliminate Fabric Waste

Serving as an educational hub, the centre welcomes students, residents, corporate staff, officials, NGOs, and waste workers.

A pioneering Circular Textile Lab seeks to stop virgin textile waste from entering local landfills. The facility turns fabric scraps into practical and creative items via circular skills training, empowers women from marginalised backgrounds, and creates sustainable livelihood paths by recycling and upcycling waste materials.

Spearheaded by Bengaluru South City Corporation, the city’s inaugural Circular Textile Lab and Solid Waste Management Learning Centre opens at the Koramangala ward facility, designed to advance sustainable waste processing and minimize landfill deposits.

Serving as an educational hub, the centre welcomes students, residents, corporate staff, officials, NGOs, and waste workers. Situated inside a plant handling 18 tonne of daily refuse, it merges classroom instruction with practical exposure to industrial waste management.

Visitors engage with interactive exhibits, live demonstrations, and facility tours covering waste segregation, the seven Rs of sustainability, composting, dry waste management, and zero-waste campus strategies.

Operating within the same complex, the Circular Textile Lab tackles the rise of discarded fashion in landfills. It builds a localized collection network across Koramangala while transforming unwanted garments into innovative consumer products.

Additionally, the program equips women from lower-income backgrounds with valuable vocational training, fostering sustainable careers through material transformation. Organizers plan to replicate this scalable model across other city wards.

Combining awareness, hands-on solutions, waste diversion, and green job creation, these twin projects adopt a comprehensive learning-action-impact framework for municipal refuse management.

Ultimately, the ventures support Bengaluru’s broader sustainability goals by establishing adaptable, city-wide models for a cleaner and more resource-efficient urban environment.
