October 01, 2026 | By Textile Sphere India
In an exclusive interaction with Textile Sphere India, Hitendra Bhargava, CEO & Regional Management Board Member – Asia Pacific, Klüber Lubrication, shares insights into the evolving role of specialty lubricants in modern textile manufacturing. He discusses how advanced lubrication technologies are helping mills enhance machine reliability, improve energy efficiency, extend equipment life, and support sustainability goals. From digitalized maintenance practices and condition monitoring to India’s growing importance in Klüber’s Asia-Pacific strategy, Bhargava highlights the opportunities and challenges shaping the
future of textile operations and explains how performance-driven lubrication solutions can contribute to greater productivity, competitiveness, and long-term operational excellence.
Q. Klüber Lubrication is recognized globally for specialty lubricants. How is the company helping textile manufacturers enhance machine performance, efficiency, and reliability?
HB: At Klüber Lubrication, we treat the lubricant as a precision machine element, not a routine consumable. We begin with the operating conditions – speed, load, temperature, humidity, contamination risk and fabric-contact sensitivity – and then select the chemistry for each application. Across spinning, weaving, knitting and processing, this means solutions for bearings and spindles, needles and sinkers, loom gearboxes, high-temperature chains and other critical components. The objective is to reduce friction and wear, protect component life, extend relubrication intervals and minimise unplanned stoppages without compromising textile quality. For gearbox applications, our proposition is Klübersynth Gear oils | Energy Efficiency Measured & Verified – IPMVP. Average energy savings exceeding 4% in Klüber Energy Efficiency projects.* This converts lubrication from a maintenance input into a measurable lever for uptime, cost competitiveness and reliable production.
Q. What are the key trends currently shaping lubrication requirements in the textile industry, particularly in spinning, weaving, knitting, and processing?
HB: Five shifts are defining textile lubrication. First, machines are running faster and under higher loads, leaving less tolerance for friction, heat and wear. Second, product quality is becoming more demanding: in spinning, lubricants must perform reliably despite lint and changing humidity; in weaving, gear oils need strong scuffing and micropitting protection; in knitting, needle and sinker oils must combine wear protection with good scourability; and in processing, chain and bearing lubricants must withstand heat, steam, water and aggressive media. Third, mills want longer service intervals and lower lubricant consumption. Fourth, centralised lubrication and condition monitoring require products with consistent flow and predictable behaviour. Finally, customers increasingly expect performance to be documented under their own operating conditions. The direction is clear: more application-specific chemistry, cleaner operation and evidence-based maintenance decisions.
Q. Sustainability has become a major focus for textile manufacturers. How do advanced lubrication solutions contribute to energy savings, reduced emissions, and longer equipment life?
HB: There are two distinct contributions. The first is verified energy performance. With Klübersynth Gear oils | Energy Efficiency Measured & Verified – IPMVP, the effect of a lubricant change is quantified under representative operating conditions. Average energy savings exceeding 4% in Klüber Energy Efficiency projects.* The second is lifecycle value: advanced lubricants can extend oil-change and relubrication intervals, reduce lubricant consumption and maintenance interventions, and protect gears, bearings, needles, sinkers and chains for longer service. These lifecycle benefits can support a mill’s sustainability priorities. Where a customer chooses to report emissions-related outcomes, those should be calculated separately using measured site data and its approved conversion factors, rather than inferred through a generic lubricant claim. This disciplined separation keeps every claim transparent, technically credible and auditable.
Q. With increasing automation and digitalization in textile mills, how are lubrication technologies evolving to support smarter and more efficient operations?
HB: As mills digitalise, lubrication is moving from a calendar-based task to a data-informed reliability system. Digital platforms can map every lubrication point, standardise products and quantities, schedule work and create a traceable maintenance history. Real-time sensor information can be combined with lubricant analysis and historical trends to identify abnormal temperature, vibration or lubricant condition before a failure interrupts production. Automatic dispensers can deliver the right quantity at the right interval, particularly at difficult or safety-critical points. The important principle is that data does not replace tribology; it makes tribological decisions faster and more consistent. When the correct lubricant, precision application and condition monitoring work together, mills gain earlier warnings, fewer manual errors, better maintenance planning and higher machine availability.
Q. India is one of the largest textile manufacturing hubs globally. How important is the Indian market within Klüber Lubrication’s Asia-Pacific growth strategy?
HB: India is central to our Asia-Pacific strategy – both as a major market and as a capability hub. Its textile ecosystem spans spinning, weaving, knitting, processing and technical textiles, with a wide range of machine generations and demanding operating conditions. That diversity makes India an important market for developing and validating solutions with strong regional relevance. Our announced INR 142 crore expansion of the Mysuru facility reinforces this commitment by increasing local production capability, strengthening R&D infrastructure and accelerating the localisation of high-value products. Together with our Bengaluru headquarters and our tribology and analytics expertise in Mysuru, this enables us to be closer and faster to customers in India and across Asia Pacific. We see India not simply as a destination for products, but as a source of innovation, manufacturing strength and technical knowledge for the region.
Q. What common maintenance and lubrication challenges do textile mills face, and how can they improve machine uptime and productivity through best practices?
HB: The most common challenges are often basic but costly: an incorrect lubricant or viscosity, mixing incompatible products, over- or under-lubrication, contamination from lint or moisture, missed relubrication intervals and limited visibility of component condition. Textile mills also face high temperature, fluctuating humidity, chemical exposure and difficult-to-access lubrication points. The best response is a disciplined lubrication-management system. Mills should create a criticality-based lubrication map, standardise approved products and quantities, control storage and handling, train operators, and combine scheduled tasks with oil analysis and condition monitoring. Performance should be tracked through practical indicators such as operating temperature, vibration, lubricant consumption, relubrication interval, component life and unplanned downtime. When lubrication becomes a controlled process with clear ownership, mills can prevent repeat failures, plan maintenance around production and improve uptime without relying on reactive intervention.
Q. Klüber Lubrication places strong emphasis on customer value and technical support. How does the company work with textile manufacturers to optimize operational performance?
HB: Our work with a textile manufacturer starts with the machine and the business outcome, not with a product catalogue. We map critical lubrication points, review loads, speeds, temperatures, contaminants, OEM requirements and failure history, and establish a baseline using operating data, lubricant analysis and component inspection where required. We then recommend the appropriate solution, conduct a controlled trial and verify the result under representative conditions. For qualified gearbox applications, this includes Klübersynth Gear oils | Energy Efficiency Measured & Verified – IPMVP. Average energy savings exceeding 4% in Klüber Energy Efficiency projects.* After implementation, our technical teams support standard operating procedures, training, relubrication optimisation and periodic review. This end-to-end approach makes value visible in the customer’s own operation – through reliability, longer service intervals, controlled consumption, improved machine availability and lower total operating cost.
Q. As textile machinery becomes faster and more sophisticated, what innovations in lubrication technology do you expect to have the greatest impact on the industry?
HB: The greatest impact will come from the convergence of advanced lubricant chemistry, precision delivery and condition data. Lower-friction synthetic gear oils that retain film strength under high loads will be increasingly important for faster looms and gearboxes. In knitting, clean-running, readily scourable oils will need to protect needles and sinkers while safeguarding fabric quality. In finishing, high-temperature chain oils and long-life greases must resist heat, water, steam and process chemicals with minimal residue. At the same time, lubricants will be designed to work more effectively with centralised systems, automatic dispensers and condition-monitoring technologies. The decisive innovation will not be a single molecule; it will be a complete lubrication system that is engineered for the machine, applied with precision, monitored over time and validated through measurable operational outcomes.
Q. How is Klüber Lubrication leveraging research, innovation, and industry partnerships to support the future needs of textile manufacturers?
HB: Innovation in our field works best as a closed loop between research, machine design and real operating experience. Klüber Lubrication works with textile machinery OEMs at the component and design stage, while customer trials reveal how speed, load, humidity, contamination and process chemistry interact in production. Our specialists can draw on more than 100 test facilities and methods to evaluate friction, wear, temperature behaviour, material compatibility and lubricant life under controlled conditions. In India, our R&D, tribology and analytics capabilities in Mysuru help us adapt global expertise to local equipment and operating realities. The learning then flows back into product development, application recommendations and service methods. This partnership model shortens the path from a mill’s problem to a validated solution and ensures that innovation is not only technically advanced, but relevant, scalable and proven in use.
